A Global Washi Paper Distributor Since 1928
Edofiber is a worldwide Washi paper distributor, a division of Nagai Shigyo Co., Ltd., a Japanese paper company established in 1928. From our headquarters in Japan, Edofiber works directly with specialized Washi paper producers across the country — including small, highly skilled mills that do not export internationally. By consolidating production, ensuring quality control, and managing global logistics, we make traditional Japanese Washi accessible to museums, printers, designers, manufacturers, and distributors around the world.
Our role is to preserve the integrity of traditional Washi while translating it into materials that meet modern commercial and archival standards.
Our Heritage: Tradition and Innovation
Nagai Paper Company was founded in Tokyo in 1928 and restructured as Nagai Shigyo Co., Ltd. in 1948.
Traditionally, Washi was produced entirely by hand. In 1955, Nagai successfully mechanized Washi production without compromising the quality, fiber integrity, or texture that define traditional Japanese paper. This innovation allowed us to maintain traditional standards while fulfilling larger volume orders for global partners.
In 1994, we expanded operations with a new plant in Satte, Saitama, enhancing efficiency while continuing to refine our technology and manufacturing knowledge.
For nearly a century, we have continued to adapt to social and economic change while protecting the craftsmanship and character of Washi.

Our Role as a Washi Paper Distributor
Edofiber represents a network of specialized Washi mills throughout Japan.
Many of these producers are small, family-operated workshops with deep regional expertise in kozo, mitsumata, and gampi papers. While their craftsmanship is exceptional, most do not have the infrastructure to manage international sales or distribution.
Edofiber bridges that gap.
We provide:
- Global export and logistics management
- Consistent quality control
- Custom processing and finishing
- Consultation for commercial and institutional buyers
- Access to specialized papers otherwise unavailable outside Japan
Through this structure, we help preserve traditional Washi production while supporting global applications.
Washi Materials & Standards
Traditional Washi is known for its durability, texture, and fiber strength. These characteristics originate from long bast fibers such as:
- Kozo (mulberry) – valued for strength and flexibility
- Mitsumata – known for smooth surface quality
- Gampi – naturally glossy and dense
Compared with conventional wood-pulp paper, Washi offers:
- Greater durability
- Superior fiber integrity
- Enhanced texture and absorbency
- Long-lasting structural stability
Washi is made from renewable plant fibers, making it inherently sustainable from the very beginning.

Serving Museums and Conservation Professionals Worldwide
Edofiber supplies Japanese Washi to museums, archives, libraries, and conservation studios internationally.
The long bast fibers of kozo, mitsumata, and gampi provide exceptional strength, flexibility, and dimensional stability. These characteristics make Washi uniquely suited to archival preservation and restoration work.
Our papers are available in acid-free and pH-neutral options and are selected to meet the material integrity standards required for long-term conservation.
