Highest Quality Lacquered Chopsticks (Nuri-bashi)
Wakasa in Fukui Prefecture in Japan is the home of Wakasa-nuri-bashi (lacquered chopsticks) production where almost 80% of Japan’s total lacquered chopsticks are produced. Our nuri-bashi collection all comes from there.
Only a few craftsmen in the Wakasa district remain; however, they still make nuri-bashi chopsticks entirely by hand. First, two undercoat layers of lacquer are applied to the base material, usually wood, followed by polishing, additional “intermediary” coats of lacquer and still more polishing — all before the moyo (patterns), such as pine needles, seashells, gold or silver leaves have been applied.
After the lacquer dries, it is polished until the colors appear on the surface. Each layer has a different color, so a beautiful pattern will emerge. Wakasa nuri-bashi are considered luxury items in Japan.
Mass-produced versions of the lacquerware style make it possible to provide you with such Japanese traditional nuri-bashi products at prices that meet your wholesale business requirements
